South Asian Attorneys in the Arts
SABA-DC’s Women’s Committee is excited to bring together three trailblazing South Asian attorneys—Tara Rao, Shelly Anand, and Gurinder Singh—to discuss their recent artistic endeavors and how their unique backgrounds and life experiences have led them to publishing and filmmaking.
Tara Rao works for Dax Nelson, P.A. and focuses her practice on estate planning, probate and trust administration, guardianship, and business planning. Tara enjoys dancing an ancient form of Indian dance, Bharatanatyam, and recently authored a children’s book, Ready to Dance!! Shelly Anand is the co-founder and Executive Director of Sur Legal Collaborative, an immigrant and worker rights nonprofit legal organization based in Georgia. Shelly’s debut picture book, Laxmi’s Mooch, tells the story of a young Indian American girl’s journey to accept her body hair and celebrate her heritage after being teased about her mustache. Gurinder Singh is Senior Counsel at Altice USA and director of the film Rising Lotus, a short film about a Punjabi immigrant woman stuck in an abusive arranged marriage, who finally musters the courage to escape when her estranged son's life is in danger. The film has been accepted in 18 film festivals worldwide so far.
The format of this event will be interactive, and audience participation is highly encouraged.
