With the recent indictment of FIFA (the governing body for soccer’s World Cup) officials, a spotlight has finally shined on what human rights advocates have been alleging for decades – the systematic abuse and exploitation of migrant workers (many of whom are from South Asian countries) in the Gulf countries.  A shocking report by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has estimated 1,200 World Cup related deaths in Qatar so far, with an estimate of up to 4,000 additional worker deaths by 2022.  According to a recent Washington Post article, Qatar has had a troubled record when it comes to poor worker safety, with conditions for migrant workers so bad that the ITUC has called the state “a country without a conscience.”  http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/05/27/a-body-count-in-qatar-illustrates-the-consequences-of-fifa-corruption/

Please join SABA-DC member Neha Misra, Senior Specialist for Migration and Human Trafficking at the Solidarity Center, for an off the record dinner series event to discuss these labor trafficking issues and to learn about international organizations working on the front lines to change the dangerous conditions for migrant workers.   Pansaari will be serving an exclusive South Asian vegetarian and non-vegetarian dinner buffet and chai for the event at the discounted cost of $25.00 per person.
