The conversation will be moderated by Tejinder Singh, Counsel at Goldstein & Russell, P.C.

Speakers:

Pratik A. Shah

Pratik A. Shah is Chair of Akin Gump’s Supreme Court Practice and partner in the firm’s national appellate practice. He has argued 13 cases before the United States Supreme Court and briefed over 25 Supreme Court cases on the merits. He has also handled numerous cases in other federal and state appellate courts. From January 2008 to August 2013, Pratik served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General in the Office of the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice. Pratik recently received the Attorney General’s 2013 Distinguished Service Award for his role in the Defense of Marriage Act litigation, in which he was the lead drafter of the successful Supreme Court briefs in United States v. Windsor. Prior to his employment with the Office of the Solicitor General, Pratik worked in the appellate and Supreme Court practice of another international law firm, taught constitutional law as a Hugo Black Faculty Fellow at the University of Alabama School of Law, clerked for Justice Stephen G. Breyer on the U.S. Supreme Court, and clerked for Judge William Fletcher on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.

Peter Karanjia

Peter Karanjia is a partner in Davis Wright Tremaine LLP’s Washington, DC and New York offices, co-chair of the firm’s Appellate Practice Group, and a member of its Communications, Media, IP & Technology Group. Peter rejoined Davis Wright Tremaine in 2013 after serving for three years as Deputy General Counsel of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), where he was responsible for overseeing all of the agency’s litigation. While at the FCC, Peter argued a number of precedent-setting cases before the federal courts of appeals, including a case concerning wireless Internet services on smartphones and tablets, which the New York Times described as a “big win” for the Commission. From 2007 to 2010, Peter was Special Counsel to the Solicitor General of New York. In that role, he successfully briefed and argued several important appeals for the State of New York, including a constitutional challenge to a first-of-its-kind statute governing online commerce. As the Washington Post has reported, the “multibillion-dollar issue” at stake in the case “is one of the most important in modern retailing.”

Moderator:

Tejinder Singh is Counsel at the Supreme Court and appellate litigation boutique Goldstein & Russell, P.C. His practice has covered a broad range of subject areas, from judicial review of arbitrations, to intellectual property disputes, to the legality of online poker, to civil rights cases. Prior to joining the firm, Tejinder was an associate in the Supreme Court and appellate practice at Akin Gump in Washington DC, an associate in the U.S. law group at Allen & Overy in London, and a law clerk to Judge Diana Motz on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
