SABA-DC's IP Section Presents: 2016 Post Grant Proceedings Update

The America Invents Act of 2011 brought a number of changes to the U.S. patent system, the most significant of which were the changes to post-grant proceedings, the formal processes to challenge issued patents offered by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. The post-grant review and Inter Partes Review proceedings, which went into effect on September 16, 2012, have already revolutionized the patent landscape. The Federal Circuit Court of Appeals has also now had the opportunity to weigh in on post grant practice and shape the law.

Please join us for a thought-provoking panel discussion on effective strategies, lessons learned, and a synopsis of the developing case law related to post grant practice during the first four years of the America Invents Act.

PRESENTERS:

Naveen Modi, Partner – Paul Hastings

Mr. Modi is the Global Vice Chair for the IP practice and also leads the firm’s Patent Office practice. His practice includes all aspects of patent-related work, including litigation (U.S. district court, U.S. International Trade Commission, and appellate), post-grant proceedings, interferences, client counseling, and opinions. Naveen was recognized by Managing Intellectual Property as Outstanding IP Litigator of the Year for PTAB and was involved in more PTAB proceedings than any other practitioner in 2015.

Srikala Atluri, Patent Counsel – Hewlett Packard Enterprises

Ms. Atluri supports patent development, patent portfolio management, and patent transactions at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Prior to HPE, she was an associate at Paul Hastings and another international IP firm, where she focused on patent litigation and contentious proceedings at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, including post-grant proceedings, interferences, and inter partes reexaminations.

Rama G. Elluru, Administrative Patent Judge – Patent Trial and Appeal Board, U.S. Patent Trademark Office

Judge Elluru has been handling post-grant proceedings since the AIA went into effect in September 2012. Before joining the Board, she practiced IP law in the Washington D.C. area, during which time, her main focus was patent litigation in district courts and the ITC. Prior to private practice, she had an extensive career as a law clerk, including at the ITC and the Federal Circuit, where she clerked for the Honorable Sharon Prost. Judge Elluru graduated from Trinity University with a B.S. in Computer Science and obtained a J.D. from the Washington and Lee School of Law. After law school, she received a M.S. in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology from Georgetown University.

Lunch will be provided for those that RSVP.
