Committees & Initiatives

Members can serve SABA-DC through any of the following committees and initiatives.  We encourage you to join and to also consider starting a new committee or practice area section. For questions or if you would like to join any of the following committees and initiatives, please contact: sabadcpresident@gmail.com.

Endorsements Committee:  Assists SABA-DC members who are seeking a judicial appointment, a political appointment, or other leadership position.  Increases the number of leadership positions held by South Asian Americans and those committed to diversity in the legal profession.  Evaluates the qualifications of candidates who request SABA-DC's endorsement.  Maintains appropriate questionnaires for candidates, conducts due diligence on candidates which may include holding personal interviews, and votes on recommendation to the Board.  Whenever possible, identifies potential South Asian candidates for vacant positions and encourage them to apply.  If you are seeking an endorsement, please see our Endorsements policy.

Fundraising Committee: Raises sponsorship funds for SABA-DC's Public Interest Fellowship, which is awarded each year to law students interning in the public sector for the benefit of the South Asian community and the metropolitan D.C. area.

Health Law Section: Comprised of Washington, D.C. area attorneys interested in various areas of health law and policy, this section provides an opportunity for best practice sharing, education and for networking.

In-House Counsel Section: Provides a networking forum for our in-house attorney members.  Provides opportunities for professional and career development for in-house attorney members.  Serves as a forum for best practice sharing, and for increasing networking between in-house attorneys and outside counsel.

Intellectual Property Law Section: Comprised of Washington, D.C. area attorneys practicing in all areas of IP law.  This section provides a professional networking forum for IP lawyers; assists, guides, and mentors IP lawyers; and conducts continuing legal education programming focusing on IP law.

Mentorship Committee: Develops and implements mentoring opportunities for members and organizes career panels.  Administers the mentorship program which pairs experienced practitioners with law students and junior attorneys to assist with the development and success of lawyers.  On a rolling basis, the program accepts mentees, and will pair them up with mentors who can address their specific questions and interests.

Public Interest Committee: Develops, coordinates, and implements SABA-DC’s outreach effort to the D.C. South Asian community; educates the community about its legal rights and responsibilities. Works with and through existing community organizations and governmental agencies serving South Asians in the D.C. area to the extent possible. Reviews applications submitted for SABA-DC’s Public Interest Fellowship program and votes on recommendation to the Board.

Women’s Mentoring Circle:  Educates and informs members about issues affecting women, and particularly South Asian American women, in the legal profession. Organizes programs and provides settings in which members can network and discuss issues affecting women in the legal profession.
